Living in Nottingham

Nottingham is, in many ways, an ideal place to live. Its central location, served by a network of motorways and major routes and by fast rail links make London, the North, Wales and Scotland easily accessible.

The city has two universities, Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent University which boasts a renowned Law School . In addition, Loughborough University is less than half an hour away. The city also enjoys a prestigious reputation in the medical world with two major hospitals, the renowned Queens Medical Centre medical school and the pioneering Park Hospital. There are some excellent schools but, as always, care must be exercised in choosing among those available.

Although Nottingham is famous for its lace-making this is no longer a significant industry in the city. However many enterprises, ranging from Boots plc, (whose headquarters are in the city, to the Inland Revenue (which has a major tax centre in the city) give rise to a wide and expanding range of employment opportunities.

Cultural and entertainment facilities in the city are excellent with a first class concert hall, the Royal Concert Hall, two major theatres, the Royal and the Playhouse, and many other amenities. The choice of plays, operas, ballets etc. cannot, of course, compare with what is available in London. But in compensation theatres, concert halls, cinemas etc. are much closer and prices are very reasonable.

Nottingham offers a wealth of opportunities for sports fans. As well as the world famous Trent Bridge cricket ground, a test match venue and home to the successful Nott’s Cricket Club, the city boasts the National Ice Centre (home to the Nottingham Panthers ice-hockey club), the National Water Sports Centre, an annual international class tennis tournament (the Nottingham Open) as well as a rugby club and two professional football league clubs, Nott’s County and Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham is surrounded by delightful countryside - with the beautiful Vale of Belvoir to the east, the Peak District to the north-west, and rural Nottinghamshire and Sherwood Forest to the north.
